Casey Stoner took the early lead in the twenty-eight-lap race, with Dani Pedrosa and Colin Edwards chasing right behind. Rossi made an aggressive pass on Pedrosa after three laps and began a wild battle, both bikes bucking as the riders put their machines to the limit. Stoner stayed in front, with Edwards chasing in fourth.
