In an epic battle for first, Casey Stoner and Valentino Rossi traded position at Laguna Seca in California. The deciding moment was a mistake by Stoner who overdrove into a corner behind Rossi. To make matters worse, he dropped the bike in the gravel. Luckily, his Ducati did not stall, and he was able to remount and stay in second. But Rossi was gone by then, and would go on to win the race.
