Motorcycles are too fast

I am curious about the opinions of others. I hear lots of complaints from those who don't ride motorcycles about how they go too fast. I also hear complaints from motorcycle riders about how they don't ride certain bikes because they go too fast.

Most modern cars will go double the speed limit posted on the roads in their city... and I mean even the family sedans, SUVs and vans.

So then, why all the focus on a motorcycles ability to speed?

I don't know why non-motorcyclists focus on "bike speed". Anymore then when there is a bike accident, they'll (the news) make a much bigger deal out of it then say if was a car (generally they just say 'vehicle')?! What ever sells papers or gets the public to tune in I guess. As far as motorcyclists themselves who would complain about a bike "being too fast" I'd simply advise them as to what the Throttle IS for - ya' know, that darn twisty thing generally on the R/H side of the handlebars! Tell em' to not twist it so hard and/or all the way (like I used to do years ago...) and they'll be fine!

That twisty thingy on the right grip can turn only 1/2 way???? hmmm, must make a note to try this one day..... I agree it's all about the rider and their control. Just because my bike CAN wheelie doesn't me I do...the same rules apply to throttle and speed.

A favorite bumper sticker I saw one day on a bike read -

Wide Open until you see God, then brake.....

Heh-heh, my favorite is: "Ride No Faster Then You're Guardian Angel Can Fly!". I love that one! You used to be able to buy a nice brass adhesive backed one, fit right on the space between the handlebars. Just got the cheapo sticker ones now.

i think some of it a perception of speed. even if you granny shift at 8k it sounds like you're redlining it to a cager. and for every sane rider out there, there are probably 10 squids doing mach1 down residential streets.

I agree 100%. Plus the media doesn't help with high lights of any and all motorcycle related accidents that occur.

True, when was the last motorcycle accident report that DIDN'T say 'speed was a factor' especially with sport bikes.

I do believe the complaint is about the person riding, not the machine. For the most part a few mess it up for the rest of us.

Yup. I think that is the most frustrating part. I try to be polite and smile when I get pulled over, but sometimes it seems like I catch the frustrations that actually belong to the riders who got away.

I took a new rider out once and we were pretty much just putting along a couple mph under the speed limit, and I got written up for 10 over, and the officer was a real jerk about it. The only thing I can come up with is that he had a real dislike for motorcycles, perhaps sportbikes in particular. Either way it was a lose-lose because we stopped going through that town on our rides which means they stopped getting our dollars, and to put it politely human relations between their police department and us riders took a hit.
