| Devil’s Advocate 99.99% of Motorcyclists will swear by em' but I am not one of em'. I came to the conclusion years ago that anything and everything that sets off and gives the psychopaths in Cages just one more excuse to take after us with 2 tons of steel, is surely not worth the tradeoff of a bit more supposed visibility. Yes, I do however always run 2 additional small Driving Lamps on any motorcycle out on the road. They are solely for the purpose of being seen in the daytime – not even for night use. I have them mounted low so the poor abused Cage Drivers won’t get irritated by they’re being on during the daytime (heaven forbid). My contention is the blankety-blanks see em’ and are momentarily confused, “is it a car or is it a motorcycle”?! Because I cannot nor ever will accept… especially after getting plowed under (left-turned) in 1981 and the resulting Multiple-Sclerosis from the trauma 10 years ago… that Car Drivers do NOT see us?! They see us alright – never think otherwise… they just don’t give a frack! The laws of the jungle apply out there, make no mistake about it. And those that laugh it off as just a rant won’t be laughing long… say no more. LRG ![]() "With the first link, the chain is forged. | Gixxer Girl | I don't see how they help at all. Even loud pipes aren't really heard until you are RIGHT beside someone on the road or in front of them and by that time it's too late. I think they are an annoyance mainly. and while I don't completely share your feelings LowRider on that cagers just don't give a Fack, they certainly do cause a lot of problems for us. I think just like motorcyclists don't always give a **** and do ignorant things the same ratio applies to cars. Most do care, they just don't see us because they are not paying attn or they 'think' they can beat us there and turn in front mis-judging our speed due to our size. I don't think 99% have any intention of hurting a biker they just don't pay attn. That's not an excuse but it's more un-intentional than you make it sound. |

| Definitely NO arguement Sister. Obviously IF I truly felt that way I couldn't even step out the front door in the morning (for fear of being shot!)! It's been about 27 years since my last 'encounter' - even to date find it hard to deal with but manage somehow. LRG ![]() Quote:

| Super Moderator | I think the loud pipes can help, but only in specific situations. A pedestrian may hear you, before actually seeing you and not step out in front of a bike. When I'm in the truck, I'll see a bike lonnnng before I'd ever hear the pipes. If the windows are up and the Sirius is cranked, I won't even hear my own exhaust and it's pretty loud. |

| I just don't think loud exhausts are heard until you're right beside a driver. Today's vehicles are so insulated and tight that it hard to even hear an ambulance with the extra loud sirens until they right on you. Imagine how long it would take to hear them if the siren was facing the rear of the ambulance!! Loud pipes are essentially the same. The sound is thrown backwards and aggrevates those behind you and some of them would probably like to run over the rider!! Just as though you were in a small car...keep your eyes open, watch out for the other guy, assume they never see you and install a horn from hell!! CD |

| I'm thinking my own turning point came (disliking loud pipes) during one of the 8 about times I was on the now long past California 1000 MC Run. As I recall I had gotten stuck behind a bunch of Harleys with Straight Pipes / No baffles - the noise was agonizing! I think following that run off came my own Drag Pipes! Nuff' said. ![]() LRG ![]() __________________ ![]() |
