Steering Wheel Install

I came home from work tonight and there was a suspicious package on my doorstep. My military training kicked in, and I went up to the package and kicked it... kidding.

So after taste-testing the package I figured it was safe to open.

Imagine my surprise when I opened the box and found a steering wheel in it! Santa must have sent it! It would be rude for me not to install it.

Replacing steering wheel in 1995 Toyota Tacoma

So, I am totally excited and I run out and fling open the door to my truck, and I wack the mirror on my wife's Accord. Yow.

And here she comes on the way to the video store... look at her, she doesn't even know. Heh, heh...

Alright, back to business. I disconnect the battery so the airbag won't blow up in my face and make me stab myself in the neck with a screwdriver.

And then I move to the interior. There are little plastic tabs that pop out in order to expose the torx bolts.

Put in the torx wrench and unscrew from both sides.

By the way, it is not a good idea to replace an airbag equipped steering wheel with a non-airbag steering wheel. The only reason I am doing it is because I don't want to make Santa sad. With that being said, out and up goes the airbag.

I am a trend setter. I just have to remember to countersteer...

Alright, so now let's get that airbag out of there. Funny little snap...

White piece flips up first, and then the yellow part pops out.

So, the umbilical cord is cut, and the bag is removed from the situation.

See that bolt in the middle of the picture above? It has to be removed.

You are supposed to use a steering wheel puller, but Santa smiled on me and I was able to make fast work of it with a breaker bar.

I bumped the steering wheel a couple times with my fist, and it popped right loose. Congratulations, a truck with no steering wheel.

Removing the airbag wires and putting the steering wheel on

All the airbag wires need to be moved so that the adapter for the new steering wheel can be put on. So, the plastic covers around the steering column need to be removed. Oh, by the way: don't leave your windows down all day when you are living in the desert. The dirt sticks to the armor-all and then you get a mess just like you see in these photos. Now I have to clean the truck again tomorrow.

Once the covers were removed, the spiral cable has to come off.

Alas, it is still connected.

Let's move it out of the way and see what the adapter looks like when it is slid into place!

Coool.... okay, let's dig all that SRS wiring out. I don't want to cut the cables because I can sell the old steering wheel and it will be worth more with the spiral cable and all harnesses intact. So let's cut the zip ties and fish that cable out.

Alright, the cables are out, let's take a look at our progress.

I think we are ready for a steering wheel. Let's get the rubber holder off the back and get started installing.

I forgot to take pictures of the horn button wiring. I'll take it apart and shoot photos some other time. For now, let's use our allen wrench to install the steering wheel on the bolted-in adapter.

Alright, put the plastic steering column covers back on, and here is our finished product:

I have some black dye that I am going to use to cover the blue stitching, but other than that, we are done.

Nice looking wheel.

Not quite done yet.... You forgot the mirror on the Accord. What's Santa got for that?

lol. A buff and a free car wash. Luckily for me I am leaving town tomorrow so I don't have to make good on the wash and buff until at least a week from now.

Nice.....that looks good but it sure seems like a good bit of work. Did you just like this wheel better or were you trying to get rid of the airbag. In other words, what does this wheel do better? Better steering response? costmetic looks? or just something you wanted....?

The wheel is smaller, so your hands are closer in together which is nice. Mostly I wanted to find an old classic looking race wheel, but the challenge was finding one that looked cool, would fit my truck, and was really cheap. I was hoping to find a 4 spoke that looked like it came from out of a hot rod, but this one was only 30 bucks and it had the adapter that fit my truck so I bought it instead.
