I think the loud pipes can help, but only in specific situations. A pedestrian may hear you, before actually seeing you and not step out in front of a bike.

When I'm in the truck, I'll see a bike lonnnng before I'd ever hear the pipes. If the windows are up and the Sirius is cranked, I won't even hear my own exhaust and it's pretty loud.
